S. African groups demand release of pro-Palestine hunger strikers in UK

(MENAFN) Several civil society organizations in South Africa on Monday called for the immediate release of pro-Palestine hunger strikers held in UK prisons, warning that their lives are at serious risk.

“Some of the hunger strikers have now passed the 50-day mark without food and may die if urgent action is not taken,” the coalition stated. They urged the UK government under Prime Minister Keir Starmer to learn from history, referencing the 1981 deaths of Bobby Sands and nine other Irish Republican political prisoners following a Thatcher-era response to hunger strikes.

The groups, representing more than 20 organizations, described the ongoing situation as a “moral stain on British history” and expressed concern that similar approaches are being repeated under the current Labour government. They called on people of conscience globally to demand immediate bail for the prisoners and the protection of their fundamental rights to fair, transparent, and timely trials.

The hunger strikers are accused of breaking into the UK subsidiary of Israeli defense company Elbit Systems in Bristol and a Royal Air Force base in Oxfordshire. Five of the detainees are under 31, with the youngest being 20, and their health is reportedly in critical condition.

Those on hunger strike include Qesser Zuhrah, Teuta Hoxha, Heba Muraisi, Kamran Ahmed, and Amu Gib. Gib and Ahmed have been hospitalized, while Zuhrah is experiencing vision loss, Muraisi is suffering memory deterioration, and Hoxha has dangerously low blood sugar levels and greyed skin, the groups said.
