Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment leads International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies and e‑waste collection in Tshwane, 7 Sept
The Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Ms Bernice Swarts and the Executive Mayor, Cllr Nasiphi Moya, will on Monday, 7 September 2026, lead South Africa’s commemoration of the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies and E-Waste Collection Drive at the Molekwa Sports Complex in Atteridgeville, Tshwane, Gauteng.
The United Nations General Assembly designated 7 September as the International Day for Clean Air and Blue Skies to strengthen public awareness and facilitate actions to improve air quality globally. The Day seeks to raise public awareness and facilitate actions to improve air quality, protect public health and contribute towards climate resilience and sustainable development.
The theme for the 2026 International Day of Clean Air for blue skies highlights the economic and health benefits of addressing air pollution and climate change together, recognising that many sources of air pollution also contribute to climate change.
The commemoration will include a Community Dialogue and an E-Waste Collection Campaign, to raise awareness of the links between air pollution, waste management, climate change and public health, with particular attention to illegal dumping and the open burning of waste.
The dialogue will also provide a platform to community members to engage environmental challenges within their communities. As a practical component of the initiative, the e-waste collection drive will provide residents with an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted electrical and electronic equipment, while promoting responsible waste management, recycling and resource recovery.
